Improve Your Existing System

1

Conduct a System Inspection.

Evaluate your system and yard for potential issues to make sure your automatic sprinkler system is ready for another season. Just a few simple steps will go a long way towards saving water and preventing costly fines.

2

Review Your Water Bill.

Always look at your water bills. If you have a spike, you may have a leak. Leaky sprinkler systems waste millions of gallons each year. The EPA estimates that a leak about the thickness of a dime can cause water waste of 6,300 gallons per month! Fixing leaks can make a big difference in your water usage and your bill.

3

Schedule a Professional Audit.

Contact a local Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor (CLIA) contractor to evaluate your system.

4

Conduct Monthly System Checkups.

Keep your sprinkler system in top shape all season long by checking for breaks, leaks and damage at least once a month.

Water Only At The Right Times

5

Water in the Morning.

Water between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.—when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cool. Midday watering tends to be less efficient because of water loss due to evaporation and windy conditions. Watering in the evening isn't a good idea either because leaves can remain wet overnight—an open invitation for fungus to grow. By watering in the morning, you give the leaves a chance to dry out. You can set all Rain Bird clocks to water exactly when you want.

6

Follow Local Rules.

Check with your local water provider to see what days and times you are allowed to water your yard and then change your Rain Bird clock to avoid costly fines.

7

Don't Water in the Rain.

There is nothing worse than seeing a sprinkler running in the rain. Using a rain sensor (like the Rain Bird® WR2 Wireless Rain Sensor) will automatically shut off your sprinkler system when it rains, so you never have to worry about watering during rainstorms.

8

Overcome Wind Drift.

Ever seen sprinklers running in the middle of the day and watering everything but the yard? Even small amounts of wind can cause water to drift. Avoid midday watering, when winds are the highest. Rain Bird pressure regulating sprinklers and thick streamed HE-VAN or Rain Bird Rotary and R-VAN nozzles can also help reduce wind drift.

Don't Overwater

9

Turn Your Watering Time Down.

Many sprinkler systems are set to water too much, leading to soggy soil, excess runoff and unhealthy landscapes. Turn your watering times down on your Rain Bird clock as seasons and weather change.

10

Replace Older nozzles with New High-Efficiency nozzles.

Today's sprinkler nozzles are more efficient that those of years past. The key is to pick the right nozzle for your landscape needs. For slopes and hills, use lower-flow rotary nozzles like Rain Bird's Rotary nozzles and R-VANs. If you have watering time restrictions, use Rain Bird's HE-VAN and Dual Spray™ nozzles.

11

Break Up Your Watering Times Into Shorter Segments.

The greatest water waste comes from applying too much water at one time, since much of it runs off and is never absorbed. Instead of watering for one long continuous session, use your Rain Bird clock to split your watering time into shorter periods and take 15-minute breaks in between each session. This will let the water soak in, while minimizing runoff.

12

Adjust Your Watering Times for Sunny and Shady Areas.

Easy-to-set Rain Bird clocks with multiple, independent programs allow you to reduce watering times for shady areas. Add a SMRT-Y Soil Moisture Sensor to be certain you're only watering your yard when your plants demand it.

13

Water Only When Your Plants Demand It.

Overwatering is bad for your landscape's health and can lead to fungus and disease. The best way to tell if your yard needs water is also the easiest; just take a walk and look around. If your plant leaves are beginning to curl and your footprints are staying longer than usual (meaning the grass doesn't bounce back), it's time to water. With a Rain Bird controller and SMRT-Y Soil Moisture Sensor, you can be sure you are watering just what you need to maintain a healthy landscape.

Use The Right Products

14

Eliminate Misting.

Pressure Regulation in your sprinklers is just like installing a low-flow shower head. It delivers the right amount of water to get the job done, without any waste. In fact, Rain Bird sprinklers with PRS pressure regulating technology can save up to 1 gallon per minute per sprinkler.

15

Eliminate Puddles.

Water can puddle or pool around sprinklers installed at the bottom of slopes or hills, causing soggy areas, which can kill landscape or encourage fungus to grow. Use Rain Bird sprinklers with pre-installed check valves (SAM) to prevent drainage issues.

16

Use Drip when Possible.

By dividing your landscape into sections, you can water to the unique needs of individual plants with Rain Bird's low-volume drip irrigation.

17

Water Only Things That Grow.

Make sure sprinklers are adjusted properly to avoid watering sidewalks and driveways.

18

Add Efficiency to Gardens.

When it comes to watering individual trees, flowerbeds, potted containers or other sparsely planted areas, you can apply water directly to the roots with low-volume drip irrigation. This will reduce water waste from evaporation or runoff and keep weeds from growing.

19

Separate Zones by Plant Types.

Different plants need different amounts of water. Divide your yard into separate zones so groundcover, shrubs and trees can be watered separately and less frequently.

Recommended Products

20

Water as Evenly as Possible.

Different sprinklers apply water at different rates. To make sure you are applying water evenly and not overwatering some portions of your landscape, use sprinklers that are designed to work together, like Rain Bird's MPR, Dual Spray™ and HE-VAN nozzles. Rain Bird R-VANs, Rotary nozzles and 5000 series Rotors with MPR nozzles can also be used together.

Keep Your Water In Place

21

Always Hit Your Target Zone.

Large water droplets offer greater wind resistance, helping you save water on gusty days. Rain Bird's HE-VAN and Rotary nozzles can be paired with Rain Bird's pressure regulating 1800® series spray heads (PRS) to dramatically reduce water loss from misting and airborne evaporation. And, Rain Bird is the only manufacturer to offer pressure regulating 5000 series rotors.

22

Make Sure Your Sprinklers are Flush with the Ground.

Check that sprinkler heads are high enough to clear plants that may have grown taller since the system was installed.

Recommended Products

23

Clear the Spray Path.

Make sure that your plant material hasn't grown to a height that will block the spray from your sprinkler.

Manage Your Water Source

6

Regulate Your Incoming Pressure.

High water pressure can have a damaging effect on your drip system, leading to wasted water and the need to replace damaged parts. By adding a pressure regulating device upstream, you can protect your system in one simple step.

7

Use filters to protect drip emitters from clogging.

Sand, grit and debris can wreak havoc on low-volume drip emitters, leading to clogs and wasted water. Filtration systems, like those offered by Rain Bird, clear these harmful elements from your water so clogging is never an issue.

8

Use sprinkler valves specifically designed for drip systems.

Not all valves can handle low-flow operation. Choose a model designed specifically for drip irrigation, like the Rain Bird Low Flow DV Valve. These valves are designed to allow debris to pass through at extremely low flow rates.

Know Your Yard

1

Understand your soil.

The soil type in your yard is an important factor in determining how fast and how often you can water. Different types of soils have different intake rates, which will influence the type of sprinkler you choose. The ability of soil to hold moisture and the amount of moisture it can hold will greatly affect your watering schedule. A simple jar test will tell you what type of soil you have so that you can choose the best products to use when watering your new yard.

2

Choose your plants wisely.

It is entirely possible to have a beautiful, sustainable landscape using drought-tolerant plants. A great way to get ideas for your own yard is to visit a local public garden. There, you can find out how native plants can make your yard look even better with less water.

20

Break up your watering times into shorter segments.

Applying more water than the ground can absorb leads to excess runoff. Use the Cycle+Soak feature on Rain Bird's controllers to split long watering times into a few shorter periods, while still applying the right amount of water to sustain healthy plants.

21

Water less frequently to promote a healthier yard.

Soak your yard when you water and then wait a few days – even up to a week – before watering again. Deep, infrequent watering will train the plants’ roots to grow deeper and more robust. Frequent watering should be avoided, as it keeps roots near the top of the soil where they will dry out more quickly in the heat.

Water Only at the Right Times

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

3

Irrigate in the Morning.

Irrigate between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m.—when the sun is low, winds are calm and temperatures are cool. Midday irrigating tends to be less efficient due to evaporation and wind drift. Irrigating in the evening isn’t a good idea either because leaves can remain wet overnight—an open invitation for fungus to grow. By irrigating in the morning, you give the leaves a chance to dry out. You can set all Rain Bird controllers to irrigate exactly when you want.

Don't Overwater

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

6

Turn Your Watering Time Down.

Many irrigation systems are set to water too much, leading to soggy soil, excess runoff and unhealthy landscapes. Use the Seasonal Adjust feature on Rain Bird controllers to turn your watering times down as seasons and conditions change.

7

Protect Against Unauthorized Irrigation.

Take control and make sure you are only irrigating your property when it needs it. Have peace-of-mind knowing that you can guard your system against unauthorized use with Rain Bird's IQ v. 2.0 Pin-Code protection.

8

Replace Older Nozzles with High Efficiency Nozzles.

Irrigation systems are set to keep plants alive in the most inefficient areas of the system, which means that the plants in other areas get too much water. For slopes and hills, use lower-flow rotary nozzles like Rain Bird's Rotary nozzles and R-VANs. If you have watering time restrictions, use Rain Bird's HE-VAN and U-Series nozzles.

9

Break Up Your Watering Times Into Shorter Segments.

Applying more water than the ground can absorb leads to excess water running off onto streets or sidewalks. Use the Cycle+Soak feature on Rain Bird controllers to split watering times into a few shorter periods, so water has a chance to soak in.

12

Adjust Your Watering Time Back Until You See Signs of Stress.

Turn your controller down until you see signs of stress like plant leaves beginning to curl or footprints staying longer than normal. This will allow you to adjust your controller to the exact amount of water you need to keep your landscape healthy without overwatering.

Use the right products

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

13

Control Your Pressure and Reduce Your Flow.

Running your system with too much pressure creates misting and excess flow, which can waste up to a gallon per minute per spray or rotor. Adding pressure regulation to your sprays and rotors is just like adding a low flow shower head. It allows the nozzles to perform as designed, delivering the right amount of water. Rain Bird customers have documented over 215 million gallons of water saved nationwide using Rain Bird PRS series rotors and sprays. Drip irrigation systems also perform more efficiently and reliably with pressure regulation and proper filtration.

15

Use Drip When Possible.

Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the plants, saving an average of 50% over watering with traditional overhead irrigation.

16

Convert Flower Beds and Shrubs to Drip.

Drip irrigation not only saves, on average, 50% over watering with traditional sprays, it also discourages weed growth. Install drip on newly installed planters and replace sprays in beds with drip to save water.

17

Water Only Things That Grow.

Landscape designs continue to become more complicated, making errant watering a key waster. Select nozzles that provide the most flexibility to assure you are not irrigating areas that don't need the water.

18

Overcome Wind Drift.

Even small amounts of wind can cause water to drift and evaporate. Avoid midday watering, when winds are the highest. Rain Bird pressure regulating sprays and rotors combined with thick streamed HE-VAN or Rain Bird Rotary and R-VAN nozzles can also help reduce wind drift.

19

Keep Your Green Spaces and Save Water.

Use less water and maintain healthy, green landscapes. Convert overhead spray irrigation to sub-surface drip in your green spaces.

20

Separate Zones by Plant Types.

Different plants need different amounts of water. Divide your property into separate zones so groundcover, shrubs and trees can be watered separately and less frequently. Rain Bird controllers are equipped with multiple programs allowing you to adjust irrigation to meet specific plant needs. Adding a SMRT-Y Soil Moisture Sensor will also prevent watering until your plants need it.

21

Water as Evenly as Possible.

Different types of emitters apply water at different rates. To make sure you are applying water evenly and not overwatering some portions of your landscape, use sprays and rotors that are matched precipitation rate and designed to be used together in the same zone. Rain Bird's MPR and HE-VAN nozzles are designed to work together. Rain Bird R-VANs, Rotary nozzles and 5000 series rotors with MPR nozzles can also be used together.

22

Always Hit Your Target Zone.

Large water droplets offer greater wind resistance, helping you save water on gusty days. Rain Bird's HE-VAN and Rotary nozzles can be paired with Rain Bird's pressure regulating 1800® series spray heads (PRS) to dramatically reduce water loss from misting and airborne evaporation. And, Rain Bird is the only manufacturer to offer pressure regulating 5000 series rotors.

24

Add More Mulch.

A great way to conserve water and help plants stay healthy is to spread mulch in shrub beds, tree rings and flower gardens. Applying mulch helps drainage, encourages root development and improves soil by making nutrients more available to plants. It also insulates soil and plants in winter months, while cooling the soil and reducing water use during hot summer months.

Know Your Property

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

1

Understand your soil.

The soil type on your property is an important factor in determining how fast and how often you can water. Different types of soils have different intake rates, which will influence the precipitation rate and type of sprinkler you choose. The ability of soil to hold moisture and the amount of moisture it can hold will greatly affect your irrigation schedule. A simple jar test will tell you what type of soil you have so that you can choose the best products to use when watering.

2

Choose your plants wisely.

It is entirely possible to have a beautiful, sustainable landscape using drought-tolerant plants. Check out this site report for the City of Palmdale to see how.

3

Know your water pressure, and your water source.

Water pressure varies greatly based on where your property is located. High water pressure or fluctuating water pressure can have a significant impact on the efficiency of your irrigation system. If you do have high pressure, make sure you install products equipped with pressure regulating devices, which can save you up to one gallon per minute per device. The quality of water also varies greatly from community to community. Some markets use non-potable water (also known as 'reclaimed' or 'recycled' water), which requires special products that stand up to the harsh chemicals found in that kind of water.

5

Reserve grass for high value, high use areas.

When designing your landscape, use drought-tolerant plants when possible. Reserve your use of grass for areas with high value, visual prominence or frequent physical use.

Eliminate Erosion and Runoff.

11

Use drip for shrubs and flower beds.

Drip products are ideal for watering shrubs and plants. Point-source drip watering allows soils to absorb water more completely into the root zones of plants. Use low-volume drip watering to achieve greater efficiency for healthier plants and to conserve water and eliminate excessive runoff.

12

Water only things that grow.

Drip irrigation prevents weeds and encourages healthier plants by watering each plant's root zone, eliminating overspray and evaporation. This also keeps water off foliage, so fungi cannot form.

13

Select products that deliver water evenly across your entire landscape.

Different types of emitters apply water at different rates. To make sure you are applying water evenly and not overwatering some portions of your landscape, use sprays and rotors that are matched precipitation rate and designed to be used together in the same zone. 14

Use Sub-Surface Irrigation To Water Trees And Large Shrubs.

The benefits of delivering water directly to the roots of trees and large shrubs go beyond water savings. Studies show it can lead to bigger, healthier plants.

15

Control Your Pressure And Manage Your Flow.

Maintaining just the right levels for water pressure and water flow are key to attaining maximum efficiency from your drip system. Rain Bird offers the most complete line of drip control zone kits ranging from flows as low as 0.2 gallons per minute to as high as 40 gallons per minute.

16

Use Filtration To Protect Down-Stream Drip Emission Devices.

Sand, grit and debris can wreak havoc on low-volume drip emitters, leading to clogs and wasted water. Filtration systems, like those offered by Rain Bird, clear these harmful elements from your water so clogging is never an issue.

17

Use Irrigation Valves Specifically Designed for Drip Irrigation

Not all valves can handle low-flow operation. Choose a model designed specifically for drip irrigation, like the Rain Bird Low Flow DV Valve. These valves are designed to allow debris to pass through at extremely low flow rates. They also allow a filter to be safely placed downstream of the valve since they handle all sizes of debris.

Maintain your system

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

1

Conduct regular maintenance audits.

Manage your irrigation system maintenance through a regular maintenance audit. This includes cleaning nozzles and screens, ensuring proper rotation speed, and ensuring sprinklers are not leaking.

2

Check the height and level of each sprinkler.

Sprinklers can settle or get knocked off alignment over time, resulting in errant spray patterns and streams being obstructed. Each sprinkler should be flush and grade level when retracted to ensure the most efficient delivery of water once activated.

3

Verify database settings.

Verify that the information in your database matches the sprinklers, nozzles and pressures in the field. This ensures proper run times and makes sure the precipitation data in the central control system is correct.

Resources

Recommended Products

4

Maintain the golf course weather station.

Faulty sensors can give incorrect water requirement estimates to the central control system, resulting in too little or too much water being applied.

5

Monitor your pump station cycling.

Make sure your pump station is not cycling when no irrigation is occurring. Pump station cycling is indicative of a leak in the system, and wasted water on your course.

Manage water application

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

6

Perform an irrigation audit.

An irrigation audit will make sure that the pressure is correct for the set spacing on your course. If it's not, adjust your nozzles.

7

Control Your Pressure.

Make sure sprinklers are set at design pressure to ensure proper uniformity.

8

Maximize irrigation system performance.

Respace sprinklers if required.

9

Utilize flow meters.

By installing flow meters, you can record data about your irrigation to better understand and manage your water use.

Utilize Central Control Technology

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

11

Adjust watering times.

Determine run times by using an ET calculation and the precipitation rate of the sprinklers. Utilize a weather station to accurately calculate the ET (evapotranspiration) losses and the corresponding run times.

12

Monitor soil moisture levels.

Use accurate (absolute) soil moisture sensors to monitor moisture levels and irrigate to a target Volumetric Water Content (VWC) for the different site-specific management zones on the golf course.

13

Irrigate during dark hours.

Reduce the irrigation window to only irrigate during the dark hours. This will reduce evaporative losses and wind is typically lowest at this time so system efficiencies are higher.

14

Select a system that allows continuous monitoring.

Use an intelligent rain monitoring system tied to your irrigation central (like RainWatch™). If not possible, use an accurate rain switch.

15

Avoid watering when it is windy.

Excessive water can be lost when wind distorts sprinkler water droplet distribution. Stop sprinklers from operating in high wind conditions – use Smart Sensors™ to monitor wind across the property and pause or resume based on wind.

16

Create management zones.

Set up site-specific management zones for different microclimates, turf grass and soil types to ensure ET Data is being managed efficiently.

Water Management

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

18

Tap into alternative water sources.

Install rain harvesting tanks throughout the property. Harvested water can be used to irrigate flower beds around the clubhouse or to wash equipment and recycled towards irrigation ponds.

19

Reduce evaporation.

Consider ways to reduce evaporation from ponds and reservoirs on the golf course. Artificial shade is best, such as a protective evaporation cover. And, remember, underground reservoirs are free from evaporation.

20

Avoid aeration fountains during the day.

Avoid using aeration fountains during the day as they can produce fine water droplets, increasing evaporation and wind drift.

21

Use drip with trees.

Use sub-surface irrigation with newly planted trees to reduce water loss and train roots to grow deeply.

22

Choose grass wisely.

Plant native grasses that require little or no water in large 'out of play' areas.

23

Develop a drought management plan.

Develop a drought management plan. Dry-run the system to see the water savings as each level of the plan is implemented.

24

Manage localized dry spots.

Use wetting agents to help manage localized dry spots and improve the soil water uniformity. Wetting agents also help with moving and holding water in the soil profile.

25

Use drip when possible.

Use sub-surface irrigation in bunker surrouds, tee boxes, pond perimeters and hardscape areas.

Evaluate Your Existing System

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

1

Evaluate your system for proper pressure and flow rates.

An irrigation system that operates under ideal pressure and flow rates will efficiently water and fertigate the crops while reducing energy costs.

2

Flush and clean pipelines and drip tubing.

Periodically flushing pipelines will prevent partial or fully plugged nozzles. Plugged nozzles can reduce water flow, cause uneven fertigation, and stress plants prior to the next irrigation cycle.

3

Increase organic matter in the soil.

Adding organic matter helps the moisture holding capacity of the soil and provides increased nutrient availability and stimulation of microbial activity.

4

Identify and repair all leaks and broken equipment.

Small leaks in irrigation systems can go unnoticed for many years. The EPA estimates that a leak about the thickness of a dime can cause water waste of 6,300 gallons per month! Systems are available that allow you to detect and fix these leaks before they become more costly.

5

Take actions now to address rising costs of irrigation water.

The CA drought has reduced surface water deliveries and forced growers to rely primarily on well water to irrigate crops. Total irrigation water costs are projected to continue rising significantly. Now is the time to invest in new well production, on-farm solar energy production, and modernized drip irrigation systems.

Water Only at the Right Times

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

6

Avoid mid-day irrigation during peak energy usage.

Avoid mid-day irrigation, which can be less efficient due to evaporation and wind drift. And, pumping costs are often 2-3 times higher during these peak hours. Avoid the peaks by setting your Rain Bird controllers to irrigate exactly when you want.

7

Install automation to start and stop irrigation.

Adding a simple Rain Bird controller to your pump station panel allows for precise start and stop times, as well as the ability to schedule irrigation by zone or day of the week.

8

Utilize pulse irrigation methods to more efficiently move water through the soil profile.

Irrigate more frequently with shorter run times during peak ET levels. ClimateMinder™ and automated controllers from Rain Bird help growers get this done.

Use the Right Products

Some water districts will provide exclusions to water restrictions if you have a highly efficient sprinkler system. It is important to check first with your local water provider to see if exclusions apply in your area.

9

Convert from flood or furrow irrigation to a pressurized system.

Converting crops from flood or furrow irrigation to a pressurized system that delivers precise amounts of water in the right place at the right time can save thousands of gallons of water.

10

Research and apply the best filtration method.

Rain Bird automatic filters keep irrigation systems free of the contaminants that plug systems and degrade performance and efficiency.

11

Avoid irrigation runoff.

Avoid wasteful irrigation runoff by ensuring that precipitation rates are designed to operate at or below soil infiltration rates.

12

Convert high pressure sprinklers to low pressure systems.

Utilizing low pressure irrigation technology will reduce energy costs, save water, and provide for better uniformity and distribution where the plant needs it most.

13

Convert full coverage irrigation to double-line drip systems.

A double-line drip system limits irrigation to the root zone of the plant, dramatically cutting wasted water when compared to full coverage irrigation. This appraoch also assists in the reduction of weed growth.

14

Utilize variable frequency drive pumps.

Variable drive pumps conserve energy, maintain steady line pressure, and only deliver the amount of water that is needed.

Recommended Products

15

Reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with agriculture irrigation.

An efficient drip irrigation design and system should include a high performance pump, variable frequency drive (VFD), a turn-key drip irrigation system that delivers a high distribution uniformity (DU), automation, weather and soil monitoring and daily auto mobile reports on system operation. This should result in less energy consumption, fewer trips into the field, and a reduction in labor hours.

Recommended Products

16

Upgrade outdated drip irrigation systems.

Many of the early drip irrigation systems installed 15-20 years ago may be inefficient compared to current standards. A common example is the pressure compensating drip irrigation emitters that are now being used. For greater uniformity and precision applications of water and fertilizer, it's beneficial to replace non-pressure compensating tubing with a PC dripline.

17

Convert jets and micro-sprinklers to pressure compensating Dripline.

Jets and micro-sprinklers tend to deliver a large, wet pattern on the crop berms and even to the center of the tree row. This usually results in a greater potential for evaporation and soil moisture loss. The broader application of irrigation water and fertilizer may also contribute to greater weed growth.
