Expert Tips on When to Start Your Irrigation System for the Season Featured in Better Homes & Gardens
On March 2, Jeff Johnson, senior product manager of landscape for Rain Bird, was featured in Better Homes & Gardens, offering expert guidance on when to turn on irrigation systems for the season. Better Homes & Gardens is a leading home and lifestyle magazine that provides expert advice on gardening, home improvement, and outdoor living.
‘“It’s usually best to wait until the risk of freezing has passed and the soil has dried out enough to benefit from irrigation,” Johnson advises. Starting sprinklers too early can lead to wasted water and potential damage to irrigation components.’ Better Homes & Gardens reports.
Johnson also highlights the risks associated with freezing temperatures, particularly for above-ground sprinkler components.
“Systems with components above ground are the most prone to damage,” he explains. “Damage can occur when the water in the pipes freezes, causing thermal expansion. Underground systems are better protected in the fall, as it takes much longer for the soil to freeze.”
