HOW MUCH WATER DOES YOUR LAWN AND GARDEN NEED TO STAY HEALTHY THIS SUMMER?

Rain Bird’s New Online Sprinkler Run Time Calculator Helps Homeowners Save Water And Lower Water Bills With Customized Watering Schedules That Will Keep Landscapes Healthy All Year Long

AZUSA, CALIF. - (June 11, 2010) – The return of summertime heat also means the return of thirsty landscapes.  While most homeowners are aware of the increased watering needs of lawns, gardens, trees, shrubs and flowerbeds when the mercury rises, exactly how much water is needed to sustain a healthy landscape can be confusing for many homeowners.  In order to help homeowners better determine the right amount of water needed to keep their landscapes healthy this summer, Rain Bird has released a new online calculator that delivers customized watering schedules with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Available as a public service on RainBird.com, the Run Time Calculator is an easy-to-use, free, interactive, online tool for homeowners with existing automatic sprinkler systems.  Designed to take the guesswork out of watering residential landscapes, the calculator combines information on plant types, plant density, soil type, sun exposure and localized historical weather data to determine an optimized watering schedule tailored for each area of the landscape.

“The Run Time Calculator is intended to provide homeowners with a better understanding of the unique watering needs of their landscape and to help them refine the operation of their automatic sprinkler system to deliver the right amount of water at the right time.” said Dave Johnson, Rain Bird’s corporate marketing director.  “In many cases, homeowners are surprised to find that just a few adjustments to the operation of their automatic sprinkler system can result in some pretty significant water savings, and lower water bills over the summertime season. “

Upon visiting the Run Time Calculator, visitors will be asked to input information that best describes the landscape of each watering zone being controlled by their automatic sprinkler timer. The user-friendly interface provides verbal and text guidance for users that are unsure about how to properly identify soil types (clay, loam, sandy, silt, etc), types of vegetation (grass, shrubs, trees, etc.), density of vegetation, sun exposure, landscape slope and the type of sprinklers being used in each area (rotor or sprayhead).  Once completed, the information is combined with historical weather data, culled from a database of local weather stations, and a suggested watering schedule that meets the needs of the user’s landscape is delivered on the spot.

Each watering schedule includes recommended watering days, start times and run times for each zone, in addition to a monthly adjustment schedule that provides homeowners with information on properly adjusting watering times and schedules as the seasons change.

The completed schedule can then be used as a guide when programming any brand of automatic sprinkler timer, and users have the option of saving their customized watering schedule so they can make adjustments as their landscape changes over time.
