Irrigation Leader Continues Partnership with the Groundwater Foundation to Implement Groundwater-Friendly Practices and Honor Green Space Managers for Environmental Stewardship
AZUSA, CALIF. - (March 27, 2012) – The world’s largest irrigation company, Rain Bird, announced that it has renewed its partnership with the Groundwater Foundation in support of the Groundwater Guardian Green Site Program. Now in its sixth year, the program brings public awareness to the importance of protecting and preserving groundwater by recognizing green space managers for utilizing groundwater-friendly practices. As a partner in the program, Rain Bird will continue to coordinate with the Groundwater Foundation to assist green-space managers in identifying and implementing groundwater-friendly practices.
The Groundwater Guardian Green Site program, launched in 2007, was implemented in support of the Foundation’s long-term goal to educate the public on protecting groundwater resources by highlighting the efforts of exemplary environmental stewards in the green industry, including green spaces such as sports fields, golf courses, parks, office and academic campuses, and public gardens. Green space professionals that participate in the program benefit by understanding their impact on the environment and also receive educational resources and access to a network of site managers and water experts that demonstrate effective groundwater-protecting practices.
“Over their nearly 80 year history, Rain Bird has become not only a leader in the irrigation industry, but has also taken a leadership role in promoting the conservation of water and preservation of green spaces, making the irrigation manufacturer a natural partner for the Groundwater Guardian Green Site program,” said Jane Griffin, president of the Groundwater Foundation. “Our continued partnership with Rain Bird on promoting groundwater-friendly practices to turf and green space professionals is an important part of the process and we look forward to another year of fruitful collaboration and continued success in raising awareness of groundwater issues.”
Site managers earn the exclusive Groundwater Guardian Green Site designation when their site’s practices are documented to criteria including the responsible use of chemicals and water, pollution prevention and water quality protection. Each site is evaluated according to current best practices related to managing sources of pollution, protecting water quality and pesticide and fertilizer use.
“At Rain Bird, we understand that a comprehensive approach is needed to protect the Earth’s most precious resource,” said Dave Johnson, Rain Bird’s director of corporate marketing. “Efficient water use is a critical contribution to the preservation of groundwater and doing so results in more access to the vital resource, not only for our green spaces and homes, but for our food supply and natural environment. We are proud to partner with a program that brings awareness to the complexities of water conservation and the importance of preserving green spaces by supporting long-term protection and access of groundwater.”
The Groundwater Guardian Green Site program is open to anyone who manages or maintains a green space that currently implements groundwater-friendly practices.
